So, here I am. After... 2 months, I think? I'm not checking. I want to maintain the integrity of this sanctioned sanctorum. I've changed identities, names, typing styles, finished my first semester, and gained a LOT of Twitter followers. But one thing hasn't changed. I'm still gonna fucking talk about Homestuck.
CLASSPECTING
I don't remember ever talking about this topic pre-hiatus, so I assume it's a more recent interest. As a writer, I love how they describe each character's narrative role so perfectly. Though this is much less pronounced pre-god-tier, it is present nonetheless. I would've liked to compile my thoughts on what every class and aspect means, and talk about my defense of classpecting yourself as a muse or a lord, but I've done that to death on Twitter and Bluesky already (check them out :B).
So what I will do here is talk about the applications of every classpect in Homestuck—this post being about the humans, and my next being about the trolls & cherubs—or just my favourites at the very least. This will very much take a long ass time, so I might just take another month to finish this (It is currently January 5th). But I promise you. It will be done. But I'm focusing on writing my Callieroxy fic that I probably won't share, due to my anxiety regarding how good it would be, as it's my first time writing a piece of Homestuck fanfiction. Ok, I'm done now. Or, I was done a few days ago, but forgot I ever wrote this. Let's get to it.
BETA KIDS
JUNE
As the Heir of Breath, she represents the Beta Kids' freedom, especially in herself. This is most shown in her eventual ability to "retcon," saving all of her friends, minus Roxy, from a doomed timeline, defying the narrative to do her own thing. That's her near the end of her story, however. What about how she was leading up to that crucial moment? Let's take a look. 👀
Heirs are frictionless with their aspect. Breath represents freedom, intuition, and flexibility. This results in June simply going with the flow, both metaphorically and literally. She just does what feels right, and barely ever second-guesses herself. When Karkat made his horrid shipping chart, June never actually thought about whether she actually liked Rose or not, thus comphet-ing herself. She also notably is very fluid in her personality, shaping herself around the people around her instead. I'd love to say more, but I want to keep this brief in order to stop me from releasing this in fucking February.
(Consider this the January monthly post.)
ROSE
I am so sorry. I will not be able to format this correctly. But I will do my best. For the great Rose Lalonde.
Seers usually stay in the backlines, planning for their allies until the time comes to fight. They tend to under/overestimate their own abilities, as seen with Terezi's lament about her abilities being "flukes." Seers are born with an inherent knowledge of their aspect, Rose's being light—knowledge, luck, and relevance.
Rose is an exposition baby, and believes herself to know everything about the world, and is incredibly stubborn regarding this. Like her insistence that she was in any way at fault for the way her mother neglected her, as an example (however I do believe Rose has this belief due to her horrid brother sharing it.) With too much of her aspect at hand, she loses herself, and goes grimdark. I love Rose so much. I'm terribly sorry I don't have more to say. I'd talk about her Seer abilities' relevance in Beyond Canon, but then I'd have to talk about everyone else in regards to HSBC which would take so. Fucking. Long. I'm sorry.
JADE
She has the most obvious classpect bullshit. She explains some of it herself talking to Calliope in the dream bubbles. She's the loneliest girl in the whole world, but that is alleviated by her ability to socialise on Prospit. She shows creativity, with all her scheming and acting and time bullshit, and her hobbies: playing the bass, being a furry, and drawing.
As a Witch, Jade finds exploits within her abilities, and abuses them to her and her friends' advantage, like shrinking The Battlefield and all of their planets in order to allow their session to bear fruit—a theme of the Space aspect. She has to manage these all by herself. And, in the post-retcon timeline, she is all alone for 3 years on the golden ship. As she says, Space players sometimes just have to miss out on everything. This carries over to the rest of the comic, too, as she is asleep, and has a relatively meaningless role, due to PM's resilience and determination to complete the task trusted to her by her Adored Sovereign.
DAVE
It's easy to pick out the similarities between the Time aspect and the Strider. Time is constant, unstoppable iteration, and also has a link to mementos. Dave, due to his abuse, was forced to be independent at a young age, and had no time to look back nor ever relax. This continued in the session, where he was constantly doing bullshit, and dying a catastrophic number of times along the way. He spent 3 days in their session, while his friends spent 1. That means he's 2 days older than them. Pretty cool! His faded polaroids and artefacts in his room are also linked to his aspect. 8lah 8lah 8lah he doesn't deserve this many words. Let's move on.
As a Knight, his session lacks his aspect, and he must make up for that. They didn't have enough time to give Terezi those 413 Boonbonds or whatever to kickstart their retroactive communication and teamwork with the trolls, but with his time travel, they could. Knights don't enjoy their roles. Dave states that he just wishes to be, and I quote, "a dave of guy, or something". His work is seen as a duty that must be fulfilled, and not as something he particularly enjoys. Aradia loved her handiwork. Dave merely goes through the motions.
JESUS CHRIST
I simply cannot complete this in one go. It won't be released this way. Thus, I shall seperate this into just one more part. Maybe two. It has already been more than a month. I wouldn't want to disappoint my loyal readers (who don't exist) by not posting for yet another month, would I? Of course not. And I take offense if you believe I would.
